How to Date With Your Eyes Wide Open
Are you fooling yourself about who they really are?
Growing up, my stepmom used to tell me, “Date with your eyes wide open, then close them a little after you get married.”
At the time I thought that was weird advice, but I get it now. Dating, before an exclusive relationship or marriage, is about finding out who a person really is.
Not who you convince yourself they are — “He’s a nice guy under that tough exterior.”
Not who you think they could be in the future. “There’s so much potential!”
Not who you want them to be. “They’ll change.”
In dating it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of it all. We get clouded by emotions, hormones, attraction, and our own desperation to find “the one”. We date with our eyes closed and our hearts wide open.
To find out who someone really is, you need to do the opposite: date with your eyes wide open and your heart a little protected.
Why?
Because this is the dating, or talking stage as some people call it, not a relationship. You’re meeting strangers. You need to guard your heart a little while you find out if they’re worthy of your trust, time, and love. Not everyone you date will be your “one”. Most of…
