I describe the two a little differently. Personal essays use your life experiences as a lens through which to view a bigger universal truth—like my experience with illness used to talk more broadly about what makes life meaningful. Memoir is the opposite—using a bigger theme to examine and process your own life and experiences. So you might write a memoir about friendship and focus on the various friendships over your life and what friendship means to you or how it impacts you.
