I Fell in Love with a Man I’d Never Met

“Nevermet” relationships have their pros and cons

I fell in love with a wonderful man. We talked about marriage, kids, our future together. There was no doubt in my mind that he was the one. Then, 3 months later…we met.

It sounds crazy to fall in love with a stranger, but it happens all the time. Relationships where couples only know each other online even has a name: “nevermets.” For some of these couples, it’s months or years before they have their first date in person.

Is it a good idea to fall for your nevermet? As I found out, falling in love without physically being with someone definitely isn’t the same as falling in love face-to-face.

Meeting my virtual boyfriend

Online dating was relatively new when I met my ex, and because we lived in different cities, we were forced to date each other over the phone.

It was nice to get to know someone without the pressures of physical intimacy. Instead of spending the evenings cuddling and watching Netflix, we spent hours talking about our lives and sharing our dreams. I’d finish a phone call feeling giddy and silly — floating around the house in a dream-like love haze.
