In the broad outline, yes. I think that’s why it’s stuck around so long. But the main thing was New Zealanders were told there were no Moriori people left and that wasn’t/isn’t true. Almost wiped out, yes. Completely wiped out? No. Also the Moriori were not “pushed out of mainland New Zealand” like we were told. Both of those parts of the myth were used to justify and remove the guilt of colonization.
