It's not easy to win, but I would disagree that they're not for amateurs. In the contest I'm running right now, we have one category that is for exactly that--amateurs! You have to have been publishing your writing no longer than a year. If you're struggling with entries, sounds like getting some feedback on your work could be useful for you?
