The Best of Us Are Lacking Conviction
As Writers, we can do better
Joan Didion’s death has impacted me more than I expected and forced me to assess my own writing career.
I’ve been a writer for over a decade, simply taking whatever opportunities presented themselves to me over that time without much of a plan.
Mostly that’s been magazine work, like Joan, but unlike hers not deep journalistic pieces. She had a clear idea of what she wanted to say and an incredibly special way of saying it.
I’m not a journalist. I’m not that brave.
I write a lot of fluff pieces about relationships and life that won’t change the world. I’ve written copy for hair products and interviewed fertility clinics about egg donation. It’s been varied and interesting; we do what we need to do to build our careers and pay the bills.
